The Provincial Government is now gearing towards world-class sports patterned after the Olympics.
The first-ever to be staged in Bohol and intended to be an annual activity, BOHOLympics 2012 would be giving birth to a highly competitive and remarkable sports event that will provide the Boholanos the best opportunity to develop their physical well-being, compete, excel and carve a name in the regional, national, international, & global sports arena.
Provincial Administrator Alfonso Damalerio II has brought to the Provincial Development Council’s (PDC) attention RA 7160 of the Local Government Code which mandates all Local Government Units (LGUs) to conduct an annual Palarong Panlalawigan which shall feature traditional sports and disciplines included in national and international games.
According to Damalerio, this is in line with the Provincial Government’s overarching development framework with its banner programs HEAT Bohol LIFE HELPS which integrate sports, youth and the vulnerable sector in its relevant development programs.
Damalerio said that it is helpful that the Boholanos will be aware that the province has already produced regional, national, and even international sports personalities like the legendary Simeon Toribio (High Jump), SEA Games Record holders Sammy Alegada and Nicholas Jaluag (Weightlifting), Bernard Fabiosa and Peter Naron (basketball), the Docena brothers and sisters (Chess); Olympian Bobby Jalnaiz, Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and Nonito Donaire (Boxing); and Bohol’s adopted sons, the three Greatwiches who now play as AZHKAL members.
Damalerio believes that the BOHOLympics would encourage, support and integrate sports development programs in the province; provide more avenues for training in any sports discipline, both in individual and team sport.
It will also promote awareness among the youth, athletes and sports practitioners and give more importance to healthy environment and sustainable development; strengthen our efforts towards elimination of drug addiction and other vices; help the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) provide more training grounds for sports development and physical fitness for the youth including the vulnerable sector; and promote a positive legacy to participating municipalities.
Those interested including out-of-school youth (OSY) and varsity players will be screened and validated by a technical committee.
To time it for summer, PA Damalerio proposed to hold the first ever BOHOLympics, which will be chaired by Gov. Edgar Chatto, this coming April 20-22, 2012.
